What Is a Dependent Clause? A dependent (subordinate) clause has a subject and a verb, but it does not express a complete idea alone. It cannot stand by itself as a sentence. Example: Because the manager rejected the proposal . It is called subordinate because it is less important grammatically than the main clause. It depends on the independent clause to complete the meaning. Subordinating Conjunctions These words introduce dependent clauses. They establish relationships such as: Subordinating Conjunctions introduce adverb clauses. They describe the main action, not a noun. Example: When the policy changed, the company adjusted its strategy. (Tells when the company adjusted its strategy).
