What Is a Sentence? A sentence is a group of words that expresses a complete thought and contains a subject and a verb . A complete sentence can stand on its own. It also begins with a capital letter and ends with proper punctuation. Example: The scientist explained the research gap. (subject = the scientist, verb = explained). This is also called an independent clause . Sentence Types by Structure I. Simple Sentence Contains one independent clause. Structure: 1 subject + 1 verb + expresses a complete thought.
